Network security is important, regardless as to whether you’re wanting to protect your home computer or if you’re wanting to add another layer of security to your office network.

If you haven’t heard the term before, we’ll break it down for you. A VPN (virtual private network) is software that allows you to mask your IP address. It also helps to ensure any data you receive or send over an internet connection is encrypted, which means it can’t be compromised.

You’ve likely heard stories about people who have had their accounts hacked because they’re using public Wifi.  Savvy hackers don’t have much issue gaining access to your accounts and passwords if you login to your bank, your email or a your work server if you’re using an open connection.

It can happen at airports, it can happen at coffee shops; it can happen anywhere.

Benefits of a VPN

When you choose VPN software, there are several reputable products that can be purchased online. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and IPVanish are popular choices, but there are many to choose from based on your needs. Once you choose which provider you want to go with, you’ll want to see how many “seats” you’ll have access to.

This will determine how many devices you can install your VPN on. For example, if you choose a provider and a package that gives you five seats, you can install your VPN on your smartphone, tablet, home computer, iPad and you’ll still have one left over. VPN software can also be installed on AppleTV, our Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

A VPN can mask your location

This isn’t always as important, but if you do a lot of international travel, VPN software can mask where you are. If you have a streaming service like Hulu, Netflix or SlingTV, the service provider will also block access to their service if you’re logging in from a different country. With a VPN, you can choose to connect to a server that’s based in the US, which will prevent you from being Geo-blocked.

And, as we just mentioned, if you need to do some work while you’re at the airport or at your hotel, the VPN will provide an extra layer of safety, which can help keep prying eyes at bay.
