In our last blog post, we talked about the types of things you’ll want to take into consideration before you buy a new computer system. Ultimately, you need to determine what your needs are before you start shopping, because this will help you determine the type of computer you need to buy.

Sometimes, however, a standard out-of-the-box computer just won’t cut it. In this case, you may want to consider calling Rocky Mountain Computer Specialists to learn more about our custom PC options.

Below are just a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you take that plunge.

Custom systems cost more

This may seem a bit obvious, but it’s worth stating. If you need a custom built PC for gaming, you should plan on spending at least $750.  Depending on the type of addons you need (RAM, screen resolution, etc.) the cost will go up from there.

Several years ago, we knew some professional online gamers who spent in excess of $2,000 each for their custom systems.  Does that mean you’ll need to spend $2,000 to get a quality computer? No, but you will need to keep in mind that your total cost will largely depend on your needs and your budget.

High-quality, Ultra graphics can be pricey

If you’re a hard-core, heavy-duty gamer you may want a system that supports graphics quality that would fall into the Ultra category, but that choice will come with a price tag. If you can get away with high-level graphics, or even medium-level graphics, that will save you quite a bit of cash.

As you can imagine, a system that’s built to support a 4K screen resolution will cost more to build than a system that one that has a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution.

Determine your need for speed

Most of our clients find they prefer to allocate about a quarter of their budget to cover the CPU. The CPU (central processing unit) is the brain of your computer. If you have a lot of RAM, but a slow CPU, the extra RAM isn’t going to do you any favors. If you have questions about what type of CPU will work best based on your needs, and/or you’re wondering how much RAM you’ll need to make sure your computer works optimally, we’re here to help.
